Moving beyond previous brain- centered views of the human mind requires to develop a parsimonious yet integrative account that relates neural, behavioral, and social scales. Social neuroscienceSocial neuroscience has recently started to acknowledge the importance of relational dynamics when it extended its purview from social stimuli to human-human interactions. Human-machine interactionHuman-machine interactions also constitute promising tools to probe multiple scales in a controlled manner. Inspired by the electrophysiological method of the dynamic clamp, Virtual Partner Interaction (VPI)Virtual Partner Interaction (VPI) allows real time interaction between human subjects and their simulations as dynamical system. This provides a new test bed for operationalizing theoretical models in experimental settings. From the 1990s, we show how movement coordination can be used to probe the brain of individual subjects and how coordination patterns in behavior are also manifested in brain signals. From the 2000s, we present an experiment on social coordination in brain and behavior and introduce an analysis technique for EEG signals recorded in such settings. Rather than approaching such systems from their distinct scientific perspectives, e.g., neuroscience, psychology, or sociology, we unite them in the study of their coordination dynamics. A study of multiple people coordinating their behavior, dubbed ``the human fireflies experiment,'' reveals spatiotemporal metastability. Another study of real fireflies, often taken as the poster child for strong synchronization, also reveals a telltale spatiotemporal mixture of integration and segregation, as had an earlier investigation into the coordination of neural ensembles. Empirical data is contextualized with a theoretical model of coordination dynamics and confirms its prediction that weak coupling and broken symmetry play key roles.       Abstract = {One of the foremost issues in motor control and memory research concerns the sources of information that contribute in the development of memory representation for movements. This somewhat diffuse literature focusing on the relative roles of peripheral and central information in movement coding is systematically reviewed. While most studies have examined the coding and retention characteristics of movement information in the proprioceptive modality, some recent experiments have explored the efferent dimension of movement reproduction. This latter work has led to the hypothesis that, when a subject is allowed to internally organize a response, there is an efference-based mechanism such as corollary discharge which operates to prepare sensory processing systems for the anticipated consequences of the motor act. Several experiments are presented which explore this hypothesis by forcing a reliance on distance cues, by manipulating the planning and efferent components of movement, and by maximizing the encoding of proprioceptive information. While it is realized that crucial experiments still need to be performed, the results are in general agreement with an efference-based mechanism. In all cases, prior response organization facilitated the reproduction of the motor act.},
