Gary W. Perry, Ph.D.

Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science
and Professor of Neuroscience

Biography:

Dr. Perry was appointed as Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science effective June 1, 2006.  As Dean, Dr. Perry serves as the chief executive and administrative officer of the College who provides leadership and vision for the College, administers the affairs of the College, and serves as liaison between the faculty and the Office of Academic Affairs.  Previously, Dr. Perry served as Interim Dean for Graduate Studies at FAU and, since 1999, served as Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College. Dr. Perry is a tenured Professor of Neuroscience in the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences and the Department of Psychology, and is jointly appointed in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science; he is also a member of the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

As Interim Dean for Graduate Studies (2005-06), Dr. Perry provided leadership in establishing the appropriate organizational structure and operational procedures necessary to enhance graduate education at FAU. This included graduate admissions, enrollment and progression, financial support, and graduate programs and policies, while formalizing a Graduate School at FAU with an attendant Graduate Faculty.

As Senior Associate Dean in the College, Dr. Perry oversaw the design and construction of new science facilities at a cost of over $50 million. He was also responsible for the implementation of several new graduate programs at FAU, these included the PhD programs in Chemistry and in Integrative Biology, and the MS programs in Statistics and Applied Mathematics and in Biomedical Science. He worked to implement accelerated Masters' programs, with the most recent being the BS/MS program in Biotechnology offered through FAU’s Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. This latter program constitutes part of a workforce development initiative begun with Workforce Alliance Inc. of Florida and the Workforce Development Board of the Treasure Coast, Florida, and funded through a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

Dr. Perry has also served as Acting Director of the Center for Complex Systems and Brain Sciences (1997-98) and Acting Associate Dean and Chair for the Biomedical Science program (1998-99).  In this latter role, Dr. Perry was involved in the initial development of the Program for Quality Medical Education, a partnership between FAU and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. This program began as a 2+2 program to train additional physicians in South Florida, although beginning in 2007 the incoming class will be able to complete all 4 years of the medical program at FAU.

Dr. Perry is a graduate of the Universities of London and Manchester in the UK, and previously held faculty appointments at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, NY before joining FAU in 1989. He has published numerous articles in his area of research interest that includes understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms during development of the nervous system. To support his research program, Dr. Perry has received significant funding, principally from the NIH. He has served on national review panels of the NIH and NSF, and reviews for scientific journals in his field. He can be contacted as given below.
